Naren Makes His Point

CHENNAI/CHANDIGARH, August 15: In the shrill din of India’s conquest of England on the cricket field after 21 years, the sound of the bubbly being popped by an Indian in muggy Malaysia got drowned out.

Last Sunday, Coimbatore-based rallyist Naren Kumar sprayed champagne from the second step of the podium in the Malaysian Rally — the fifth round of FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship. He is the first Indian to stand on the podium of an APRC event. And, rallying doesn’t get bigger and faster in the Asia-Oceania region than APRC.

After his return to Chennai, Naren said the obvious: “Our team’s aim was a podium finish in the beginning of the season. I am happy that I was able to do it quite convincingly in the penultimate round. This will augur well for the coming days. I hope to continue with good performance in the Rally of Indonesia,” Naren, told TOI
